Fixing a Leak in a Pop-Up Camper Awning
For those camping in a pop-up camper, a reliable awning is essential for providing shade and protection from the elements. However, if a leak develops in the awning, it can be challenging to repair without the proper parts and tools. You need to determine the source of the leak, patch any holes or tears, and seal the seams.
Parts and Tools Needed
- Clean cloths or Magic Eraser
- RV sealant or Flexseal
- Patch kit with adhesive
- Scissors
- Putty knife
- Waterproof coating
- Brush
Determine the Source of the Leak
The first step in fixing a leak in a pop-up camper awning is to determine the source of the leak. Look for any holes or tears in the fabric and inspect the seams for any gaps or weak spots. If any holes or tears are found, they should be patched with an appropriate patch kit and adhesive. Consider using a paint sealant if the area is large (but not ripped), like in the video above.
Sealing the Seams
Once holes or tears have been patched, you should seal the awning’s seams to prevent future leaks. First, clean any dirt and debris from the seams with a clean cloth. Then use a putty knife to apply RV sealant to the seams and spread it evenly. Allow the sealant to dry for recommended time before applying a waterproof coating with a brush.
Safety Tips
Be sure to wear gloves and old or protected clothing when applying waterproof sealant. That stuff is sticky as it should be and will stay where it lands. Safety glasses are recommended to protect your eyes from any splatter.
